Joe on current and future albums
For those of you who don't frequent the OF. This was the latest posted by Joe.
Hey everybody! Let's put some rumors to bed, shall we?? So, "BEST OF DEF LEPPARD" didn't come out in the States.....YET! The only reason is that the US market needs a so-called "active track" to promote the album, more than the European and Far East markets do. Earlier this year, the US label encouraged us to re-work "LONG LONG WAY TO GO" - until they remembered they had promised Lionel Richie they would work on his version! The label didn't want to go back on their word to him, and we respect that (if for no other reason than if it had been the other way round, we would've expected the same respect)....so we were back to square one.
Record companies do what's called 'testing' a song, and as there was no other "new" song to promote, they had a listen to some of the finished tracks from the covers album we had been working on. "WATERLOO SUNSET" went down well with the UK office, but as much as the US liked it, they didn't see that particular song being a big airplay one, so they're still listening to other stuff! As I wrote in the liner notes for "BEST OF" "WATERLOO SUNSET" is a taster for the covers album which is yet to be completed (so as far as the talk goes of the record company not wanting to put it out, I can simply say that the album is actually NOT finished yet)!
Back to "BEST OF". As I type, the US label are 'testing' tracks at certain stations, and we won't know for a week or so. But hey, if you look at the glass half full, you could be looking at TWO albums in the near future. And if you look at the glass half empty, maybe only one.
People are starting to get a bit excited about the content of the the covers album. Hey, we THINK we have a title, but can we at least keep that secret for a while please?). Since we all grew up collectively on the British glam scene, which happened between about 1971 and 1974, it'd be fair to say that the majority of the material comes from that period, but there's a couple of exceptions..... As a teaser, we do a Badfinger song from 1970 and a let's say more "punky" number from 1978 (although it was written in 1968). Am I cruel, or what, haha! OK, OK, couple more..... We do a rip-roaring version of "20th CENTURY BOY" by T.Rex, featuring the MIGHTY Stevie Lange on the big girly oohs and aahs. And then there's a version of the David Essex classic "ROCK ON" which is one of the best sounding things we've EVER recorded... BIG BIG BIG stuff!!! Alright, alright, wait until you hear our version of "HELLRAISER" by Sweet, featuring a very special guest..... I'm not telling, but we won't keep you in the dark forever, I promise!
So there you go, Uncle Joe scotching all those nasty rumours on some of those other websites out there who print as gospel something said in private (and possibly as a stream of conscienceness and overheard by some straining ears)! The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades, baby .
It's 9.00PM on a Friday night, November 19th..... Halfway through producing Ricky Warwick's new, as yet untitled album.
Love 'n' peace,
Some of the more funny parts of this (to me)
